Dr. Hansen oversees AHS’ organizational operations and leads the implementation and execution of its strategic plan as AHS and its partners strive to transform Maricopa County into one of the best places to be a pet. Prior to joining AHS, Dr. Hansen spent 16 years with the ASPCA, most recently as the organization’s Chief Operating Officer. Dr. Hansen also served as Director of Veterinary Research and Support for Wellmark International and practiced clinical veterinary medicine in Houston and Chicago. He serves on a variety of mission-critical boards, including the Hill’s Shelter Advisory Board, the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Legislative Advisory Committee, The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement, the American College of Animal Welfare, Arizona State University’s Community Advisory Council and the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office Community Advisory Board.

Dr. Hansen received his BS and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from Iowa State University and received an MS and MBA from the University of Illinois. Dr. Hansen is board certified by the American College of Animal Welfare and the American Board of Veterinary Toxicology.

Dr. Kamiya graduated from Colorado State University, College of Business with a Master of Business Administration degree in 1999, and then went on to also complete a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado State University, College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in 2005. Dr. Kamiya’s first encounter with the shelter world occurred at the age of nine when her family adopted a mixed breed puppy from the Hawaiian Humane Society.  A love of animals and a childhood dream of becoming an animal doctor evolved over the years into a passion for advocating on behalf of homeless and lost pets.  Prior to the shelter medicine residency, she has worked as a shelter veterinarian in humane societies, municipal shelters, and rescues in the Denver-Boulder areas of Colorado, and the greater Phoenix metro area of Arizona. Dr. Kamiya’s main interests are in infectious disease, shelter management, surgery, and animal cruelty investigation.

Jerrica Owen joined the National Animal Care & Control Association in April 2021, as the Director of Partnerships and Programs and was named Executive Director in December 2021. She brings with her nearly 20 years of experience in emergent animal welfare, engaging and developing a diversity of staff, shelter operations, and leading successful initiatives in Animal Welfare in a cross-cultural environment. Previously the Director of Strategic Initiatives for San Diego Humane Society, Jerrica supported achieving success on the organization’s primary strategies.
