Learn about eye injury treatment and disease management both in the shelter and in foster care. This presentation will discuss common eye diseases in the shelter, including causes of corneal ulceration, conjunctivitis, and eye loss. Understand how to meet the challenges of providing proper eye care to shelter and foster animals, including staff training, equipment, and costs. The presenters will discuss:
• Managing ophthalmologist referrals
• Deciding which animals to send to foster and when
• Monitoring eyes in foster care, including selecting fosters and training them
• Getting buy-in from your staff and board to support the staff time, equipment needs, and training related to eye care
They will review a special needs case, including how the shelter’s communication/fundraising staff raised community funds and awareness to treat an animal in need of eye care.
This presentation is geared towards shelter medical personnel including veterinarians, technicians, as well as shelter and foster leadership.
