Large dogs make up about a quarter of shelter intakes, and they wait the longest to find homes. Hill's Pet Nutrition's 2026 State of Shelter Pet Adoption Report points to why, and it's not just what you'd guess. Cost and housing barriers are real, but the sharpest divide between someone who adopts a large dog and someone who doesn't is confidence. People who feel equipped to handle a big dog adopt them at nearly three times the rate of those who don't.

What you can expect

  • The latest data to support large dog adoption. Findings from Hill's 2026 report on what's holding adopters back, and what closes the gap.
  • The inside view on two programs working to increase large dog adoption. Arizona Humane Society's Big Dog Campaign and Wisconsin Humane Society's Benchwarmer Tryouts.
  • A "choose-your-own-adventure”, audience driven conversation. After a short grounding conversation, you and the rest of the audience will vote on which questions are asked next, so the discussion covers what matters most to you.

Join us, and you'll be better able to:

  • Evaluate which large dog adoption barriers are most relevant at your own organization.
  • Examine the strategic choices behind the Big Dog Campaign and Benchwarmer Tryouts and identify what could translate to your own shelter's size, budget, or community.
  • Adapt at least one strategy or insight from the session to your own organization's large dog adoption efforts.
