As the population of those experiencing homelessness continues to rise in the US, the challenge of providing access to veterinary care becomes more important. The strong bond that exists between the homeless and their pets is well-recognized, as their pets often provide their primary purpose in an otherwise desperate and often hopeless life. This presentation will provide an overview of homelessness in the US and the additional barriers faced by those that have pets.
Street Medicine describes delivery of care to many different scenarios, including street clinics, encampment visits, and multi-service events. Although basic, street medicine requires astute history-taking, physical exam skills, and an ability to communicate in a non-judgmental way to build trust quickly. Street medicine has been described as the convergence of Shelter Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Social Work, and Public Health, and those involved in those fields often will be collaborating with a One Health approach.
