Toward a Culture of Belonging and Inclusion in Animal Welfare
How can we ensure inclusion, safety, and belonging for transgender* people in our organizations?
Webinar attendees will unpack the importance of DEI work concerning transgender, non-binary, and gender-fluid people in the animal sheltering and well-being movement, and how this work is inherently anti-racist and anti-oppressive. This webinar will cover a brief history of gender, the intersectional, Black Feminist roots of queer theory, and unpack some of the most asked questions about transgender and non-binary identities.

Rory Adams utilizes feminist frameworks to honor the connection between people and animals. As a transgender person with an education in feminism, gender, and literature, Rory is most comfortable leading from the margins; working at the intersections of social justice and animal welfare to create equitable and inclusive change for people, animals, and the planet.
Before joining PetSmart Charities, Rory worked for over 16 years in animal well-being at the local and national levels, including American Pets Alive and Maddie's Fund, where he created, developed, and implemented Maddie’s Apprenticeship and Fellowship programs. Rory is passionate about ensuring all shelter animals are valued and given a chance at life. Rory’s areas of expertise include connecting people and pets, creating learning opportunities for the field, increasing community engagement, removing barriers to foster care and adoption, and teaching shelter directors and advocates how to access, understand, and utilize shelter data.
Rory believes that people are the solution to creating a world where animals and people thrive. Rory is committed to expanding programs that grow future leaders, heal injustices, facilitate the inclusion of historically marginalized people, and celebrate the love between people, animals, and our habitats.

Animal sheltering organizations face growing challenges with acquiring affordable liability insurance coverage. As the number of claims (including some in the seven-figure range) continues to rise, even those shelters with solid track records are paying the price. Serious dog bites seem to be at the epicenter of this insurance crisis. Animal welfare organizations are struggling to find coverage -- and when they do find it, the cost can be prohibitive.
In this discussion co-hosted by CalAnimals and The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement, we will have a candid conversation with two representatives from the insurance industry who will share the big picture of what - from their inside perspective - is causing insurance challenges and what organizations can do to mitigate their risks and improve their chances of securing coverage.

Jill Tucker is a Certified Animal Welfare Administrator and has been involved in the field of animal welfare since 2002, serving as the CEO of CalAnimals since March of 2019. Throughout her career, her strong leadership skills have enabled her to facilitate growth, collaboration, and financial turnarounds, while maximizing impact for the animals.
Prior to joining CalAnimals, Ms. Tucker served as the Executive Director of Woods Humane Society in San Luis Obispo, CA where she led a facility expansion, a merger with the North County Humane Society in Atascadero, and the opening of SLO County’s first public spay and neuter clinic. During this time, the organization also more than tripled its lifesaving capacity by dramatically increasing animal intakes and adoptions. Previously, she held the position of Executive Director at the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society, where she spearheaded rapid growth and the completion of the organization’s multi-million dollar campaign for its new, larger shelter.
Jill holds a BS in Business Administration, has worked as a consultant for the Humane Society of the United States and the Vermont Humane Federation to build a statewide animal cruelty response system, and previously acted as Executive Director of the Addison County Humane Society in Middlebury, Vermont.

Jim Tedford accepted his dream job when he joined The Association as President & CEO in June of 2015. But Jim is no stranger to the organization. He has been a member for more than 30 years and served as our Board Chairman some twenty years ago. Jim has been actively engaged in the animal welfare movement for more than 39 years having served as CEO for animal sheltering organizations in New York, Louisiana and Tennessee. He served as a regional director for The Humane Society of the United States and then spent six years providing direct response marketing services to animal welfare organizations. Jim presents frequently at national and regional conferences on various animal welfare issues, organizational development and not-for-profit management.

We will explore some of the nuances between safe spaces and brave spaces, and identify skills and actions for leaders to create thriving environments that are both safe and brave.
Leaders who create work environments that fully support diverse identities have to be not only safe but brave. Inclusive organizations build cultures of psychological safety, in which all members feel safe and encouraged to share their honest ideas, opinions, and concerns without fear of being ridiculed or punished. When we have that kind of safety we can build brave spaces, in which individuals can engage in courageous conversations about uncomfortable topics, can dissent respectfully, and can challenge systems that impede progress toward diversity, equity, and inclusion for all.
In this session, we will explore some of the nuances between safe spaces and brave spaces, and identify skills and actions for leaders to create thriving environments that are both safe and brave. Leaders who wish to establish an inclusive work environment will especially benefit from this webinar.

Explore why messaging challenges are happening in animal welfare, how they shape the realities we experience every day, and what we can do about them.
Animal welfare has a messaging problem. Current messaging can stoke divisions amongst those who work in animal welfare and between us and members of the communities we serve. There is an increasing focus on access to care and programming to support the human-animal bond, but we use words and stories that hold us back. Everyday narratives undermine our efforts to help people and their pets together and contribute to an epidemic of burnout in animal welfare and sheltering.
When we change our messaging, we can tell a different story and shift from harmful narratives and beliefs to those that create connection, collaboration, and, ultimately, better programs. In this session, we explore why messaging challenges are happening, how they shape the realities we experience every day, and what we can do about it. You will hear about SPARC (Supporting People and Animal Relationships for Change) and the program’s messaging principles and practices that can help us do our most impactful work for people and animals.

Alison Fotsch Kleibor is the President & CEO of the Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) and has been with the organization since 2007. Prior to stepping into the CEO role, Alison held the position of Executive Vice President, supporting the people & culture, communications, development, and shelter operations functions of the organization. She has served also as the Vice President of Animal Sheltering, Racine Campus Director, Client Services Manager, and Senior Adoption Counselor. She is a Certified Animal Welfare Administrator (CAWA), a member of The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement (AAWA), and a board member of Shelter Animals Count (SAC).
Hanna Lentz
Co-Founder, Impact by Design
Hanna Lentz is a Co-Founder of Impact by Design (IbD) and spent seven years as Managing Director and COO, working closely with animal welfare and sheltering organizations in North America to strengthen their work through planning and program development. During her time at IbD, she was part of the Evolution of Animal Welfare Task Force and helped lead the development of SPARC (Supporting People and Animal Relationships for Change). Her two decades working in animal welfare includes time working at U.S. sanctuaries and animal shelters in Washington, DC, Massachusetts, Michigan, and New York, and working internationally as the Global Program Officer for Companion Animals at IFAW, where she helped facilitate community-centered dog and cat population management programs in Mexico, Bosnia, and Chile.
Brad Shear, CAWA
Executive Director, Potter League for Animals
Brad Shear is the Chief Executive Officer of the Potter League for Animals in Rhode Island, and is one of three Certified Animal Welfare Administrators (CAWA) in the state. During his tenure, Brad has expanded existing programs and created new partnerships, including acquiring the state's largest spay and neuter clinic and the state's largest full-service non-profit veterinary clinic. In addition to his work at the Potter League, Brad has served as board chair of The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement, chaired their Best Practices and Emerging Trends Committee, and serves on their Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee. He also serves on the Hill's Pet Nutrition Shelter Advisory Council and the New England Federation of Humane Societies' advisory committee.

Understand the knowledge and skills needed to provide compassionate and effective human case management for any program working with vulnerable pets.
Animal welfare advocates are on the front lines and able to provide information, guidance, and resources to people with pets facing housing challenges. This session will provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to provide compassionate and effective case management for any program working with vulnerable pets. You will also learn how to collaborate with the human services sector in your community to improve outcomes in keeping people and pets together.
Additionally, we will discuss laws that help tenants combat being denied housing due to their pets. Keeping pets housed requires keeping people housed. In 2022, the Humane Society of the United States launched its first pet-inclusive housing mentorship with the Cleveland Animal Protective League and Richmond SPCA. Attendees will see examples of geographic information system (GIS) mapping to identify areas of need in their communities and learn how to use a combination of data, policy change, and safety net programming to help families maintain or secure pet-inclusive housing.

Sharon Harvey is the president & CEO of the Cleveland Animal Protective League (APL), a private, nonprofit humane society in Ohio, where she and her team are working to reduce access to pet care and housing barriers that are faced by families living in an impoverished, under-resourced community. Sharon also regularly lobbies and testifies for stronger animal welfare laws in Ohio. Sharon currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for both Shelter Animal Count (the
national database for animal welfare), President of the Board of the Ohio Animal Welfare Federation and is a member of the Hill’s Shelter Advisory Board. She is a past board member for the Association for Animal Welfare Advancement.Garrett Parsons
Pet Support Supervisor, Found House Interfaith Housing Network
Garrett Parsons is the Pet Support Supervisor at Found House Interfaith Housing Network in Cincinnati, Ohio. For the past 6 years and with the help of many volunteers, he has established/grown a shelter program for pets whose owners are in crisis with the goal of keeping families together and out of animal shelters. Since 2016, the Pet Support Program has kept several hundred animals with their owners through various crises such as homelessness, rehabilitation, and hospitalization. As a Licensed Social Worker, Garrett is a big proponent of pet inclusive social work practice and ensuring that the entire family is served during a crisis or transition. In addition to his work with Found House, Garrett serves on the Board of Directors for Cliftondeer.org, a non-profit white-tailed deer sterilization project, where he serves as the Vice President of Field Operations.

Dianne Prado is the Founder and Executive Director of the Housing Equity & Advocacy Resource Team (HEART LA), a legal non-profit that helps ensure people and their pets remain together & housed. Dianne is an appointed public member of the CA Veterinary Medical Board, trainer and consultant for the Stay Housed Los Angeles (SHLA) eviction defense program, and Lecturer in Law for UCLA Law School teaching Los Angeles Housing Law and Policy.
